Dear Furqan, can you please tell mewhich software you uses for VoIP calls from gprs. As per my knowledge, VoIP not supports GPRS as much. It works good on 3G and WiFi phone.

hello everybody ,
i subscribed to Zong unlimited gprs/edge package. I use it in islamabad where zong offers Edge services. The connection is really slow , disconnects a lot . avg download speed is 1KB/sec.

I have been complainin about it for the last 15 days , and everytime i call them , they say it will be fine in 2 days.

i m also using mobilink unlimited grps package. mobilink is currently gprs , soon they’re gonna offer edge, and the avg download speed is 5KB/sec. I use voip software to call abroad with mobilink’s gprs.

mobilinks gprs is wayyyyyyyyyyyy faster than ZonG’s Edge.

mobilink has a bandwidth of 33.6 Kb/sec , ZonG claims to has 59.2 Kb/sec

ZonG is pathetic , the network sucks , the internet sucks.

it really doesnt make a lot of difference saving a few paisas . at the end of the day all u can save is like 10 to 15 rupees , but its about quality and service.
try calling zong’s callcenter .

Zong is good as far packages and other offers are concerned. Off course they have to catch new subscribers. But if you analyse their hardware and equipment. Its totally China made. Where as Telenor is using Nokia and Siemens, Warid is using Siemens, Mobilink is Using Siemens, Motorola and Alcatel, Ufone is using Nortel and Siemens.

Best among all are Siemens and Nokia. Worst among all is made in China and Alcatel. In long run, only that company will compete which will provide fast and reliable service. voice quality, connecting time, roaming, signals, call disconnection and lot more depends on Hardware. So once telecom sector will get full mature then people will move from cheap service to quality service. (as professionals using it right now).

Till then, Zong can add more customers. Prepaid customers are not reliable. they can switch any time. Post Paid customer remains with same company for long time and 40% of revenue is coming from few Post paid customers. So companies can’t neglect them at all.

Dear forget every thing like USB or GPRS modem. If your cell phone and notebook has Blue Tooth then put both of them ON and configure them. But you will need to visit your Telecom operator’s service centre for internet explorer settings.

Keep in mind, GPRS or EDGE (only in limited areas) is not substitute of DSL or WiMAX for high speed exploring. Its very slow and disconnect very fast. Even web browsing by using V-fone internet is quite fast and cheap than this GPRS on notebooks.

There is also one card available (device). In which you have to fix your SIM and insert in laptop slot for card. Its the best option in all. you will find good speed by that device as compared to linking notebooks with mobiles.

If you have a cell phone with gprs-modem capability, its the best. You will not even need to plug the SIM card out. (my n73 does it good). Otherwise, you can get a USB GPRS Modem like this: Light Wave USB GPRS/GSM

It is not absurd to offer free services to users when an operator has to build a subscriber base. Especially when we are talking about a service which at maximum is dimensioned to handle 5% of the total subscriber capacity of the operator.

Moreover, operators earn a large pie of their revenues from Postpaid customers. Not bringing them in perspective would be naive. Any postpaid customer would not change his connection just because Zong is offering unlimited EDGE at Rs. 100 cheaper than his existing connection. To a large number of Postpaid users, Rs. 100 would not make a lot of difference and it would definitely be not worth changing connection for.

For those people who are about to become Postpaid customers of any operator, they are the ones Zong has to focus on at the moment. To win them over, a price difference of Rs. 100 would not make a difference when 1) Network Coverage is not comparable 2) Good content is not available

At the moment, it would just look like another package from Zong, it wont have any impact on existing Postpaid customers.

well i dont know about you guys but i think its a great deal…yes mobilink does offer unlimited gprs at 500/month but that is only on a postpay connection not on a prepaid connection. Zong is offering unlimited GPRS on both prepaid and postpaid connections and also saving you rs.100 and Mr. Umer it would be absurd if these service providers started giving out free gors/edge to their users, but yes if u give them somehting no one else is offering right now in the market at a low price in my opinion that is a deal breaker for sure.

And well if you’re talking about the rates then it is way more economical than any network out there. No one has matched 12 aaney call to all networks including PTCL.

Offering GPRS for Rs400/- is not a big deal. Mobilink is already offering Rs500/- per month for postpaid customers this deal. Mobilink has bigger coverage and good GPRS softwares and equipments.

Mr Adil, International SMS are mentioned in VAS icon (Value Added Services). Its also stupidity that you are mentioning local SMS with teriff and Int’l SMS charges in VAS.

An other bigger threat coming soon is Nokia 810 Tablet. it is WiMAX enabled and can work in WiMAX coverage areas. So users can buy it for high speed and low cost broadband on their Nokia 810 Tablets. GPRS/EDGE/DSL are not substitute of WiMAX presently. Only 3G (Third Generation) system is reaching speed of WiMAX. and we can’t expect 3G at cheaper rates in Pakistan. Although 3G is not available in Pakistan right now also.

Offering Edge services PKR 400 / month can not be a deal breaker in any case. People who do use unlimited internet services on their existing connections, would not see it as an advantage. To be able to make sense, first they’ll need a good subscriber base and they can not attract subscribers with PKR 400 / month internet package. Once they have subscribers, they need to come up with new and original content and once subscribers get addicted to the content, only then their internet packages would start making sense.

In my opinion, if they really wanted to attract customers on the basis of their Edge services, better make it free for everyone and then some people might think about changing their connections to Zong. Once they reach a threshold, only then they will need to work on their internet packages

But international sms rates are not listed. Plus i don’t think they are as much cheap as other once. i think its just has matched with other packages of warid and telenor. Just under new brand and new theme :)
